For our fellow ebayers who have already been burned, you already know what we are writing about. For those of you who are unfamiliar, let me give you some typical signs to look out for. Check out who your buyer is when he buys from you. How long has he been on ebay? How many transactions? Where is he based, etc? Here are four typical types of approach to be wary of and use caution: 1. The buyer just signed up to ebay, has no record of transactions and his first transaction is your expensive item costing hundreds of dollars. Be Careful. 2. The buyer is dated as having been on ebay for several years, but in all that time has less than ten transactions, maybe not even five. Maybe none at all. And now he wants to spend hundreds or more or your item. Beware. 3. The buyer has only a few transactions but all for inexpensive items, or the items are hidden so you cannot tell the cost. Now all of a sudden he wants to buy your item for hundreds of dollars or more. Beware. 4. The buyer has lots of expensive purchases but all in a very short period of time. Or, he wants to buy a lot of costly items all in the same day, or the same weekend. Beware. Maybe they're okay...but just be cautious. These are just a few of some of the types of ways of operating of the scammers who either steal credit cards or create fraudulent computer accounts via stolen identities, or simply bogus means. If you suspect anything you should call ebay and report them. Also keep track of your payments as to how much you sell and what purchases are calibrated and make it to your account each month. Any glitches? Inquire and report to ebay. Since there is no way to recoup expensive, rare, or one of a kind merchandise, once it is sent out to a purchaser, we should reserve this right as sellers, in light of the current crisis, to protect our business. Mainly this warning is to let scammers know we are aware that they are out there, and that we are being vigilant about their activities. We realize it is difficult for ebay to police all scammers and when they discover them they do alert the FBI and we appreciate that. Post/Script: In the earlier days of Ebay, we were allowed to take money orders and/or checks as a means of payment. In such a case the money order or check was mailed and could be cashed and the money secured. Then we would ship out the merchandise. If the check or money was bogus, it did not cash and no merchandise was sent out. Loss prevention guaranteed! But that left out the middle man, of course. Amazon did not allow this and the owner became the richest man in the world. Handling the flow of cash obviously has its advantages. That is why banks stay in business. I am not complaining. Banks provide a needed service. Amazon, Ebay and marketplaces like them do also. They are the future and the future is here. I get it. But it would be nice to still have the option, that when a suspicious buyer pops up, to be able to just say, "Are you willing to send a money order, then I'll cash it and ship out your merchandise?" A scammer would undoubtedly reply "heck no" to that...if he replied at all. Case closed. Ah, for the good ol' days.
