Pictured here is a famous Shino tea bowl called Unohana-gaki(deutzia, a shrub bearing white flowers) (Pl. 4, 5).
“lt was on an early spring day at a small tea house, Tengo-an,where l was waiting for tea which was to be served in the Unohana-gaki tea bowl. The late Mr. Mitsui, the owner of the bowl,
handled the bowl nonchalantly while preparing the tea. When l held the tea bowl in my hands, its faint warmth, its moistured body, the vivid contrast of green tea and its thick off・white glaze
showed me that it was made for use rather that just to be admired behind a glass case and that it could only show its best features when it was being used.
